I think these reviews clearly show what I mentioned at the start of this post, there is only a handful of episodes that completely fulfill my criteria, the rest are either too unrealistic, or fail to entertain. Now that could be OK if it was like Game of Thrones where the first two seasons are really good and after that you can stop watching, but as you can see the good episodes of Black Mirror are spread out over the entire series. In addition, there’s nothing about an episode’s title, or themes, or description on Netflix, that gives any clue to whether it will be good or not; take for example Nosedive or Smithereens that aught to be good judging by theme, but just aren’t interesting. What this means then, is that the only way to know if an episode is good, is to watch it all the way through, which is really annoying.
But that’s not all. As you can see from my reviews there are plenty of episodes centered around some kind of brain implant or similar technology. I’ve already made it abundantly clear what I think of such technology in the context of Black Mirror so of course I wouldn’t rate those episodes very highly. But here’s the thing, part of the reason there are so many such episodes is that the creators of Black Mirror seem to have run out of other ideas at some point, and simply repeated old ones with some minor adjustment. I find this extra annoying because there are plenty of other, far more realistic, technologies that would fit well with the concept of Black Mirror that they could make episodes about. Imagine an episode about hackers taking over someone’s IoT enabled smart home, or an epsiode about AI deep-fake videos, but no, they had to make yet another one about uploading your personality to a computer.
Furthermore, there are some episodes that, despite being rather unrealistic, are really entertaining, like USS Callister, which shows that at least some of the people working on Black Mirror are very good at their jobs. It feels like a waste of talent to have them keep making increasingly uninspired episodes about brain implants. I guess what it comes down to in the end is this: they had an intersting concept for a show, and they clearly had some talented people working for them, but for some reason they failed to realize that potential and instead ended up making a rather mediocre series. I really wish Black Mirror was as good as it had potential to be, and the fact that it’s not is annoying.
